PRACTICAL HUMAN ANATOMY
DEEPENING AWARENESS, AWAKENING SENSITIVITY
The third attunement, which is done in the same way as the first and second, invites the students to a deeper awareness of the Reiki energy, sometimes through an experience that is uniquely individual, sometimes through an experience that is shared. Students sitting beside each other sometimes report hearing the same sound, such as a temple gong, or seeing the same view, as if they sat beside each other not only in the Reiki classroom but also in other dimensions of space and time.
“I felt you moving around me. I could feel something like a cone of light that came down over my head when you were standing behind me. I can still feel it. I can feel my hands, too. They feel kind of sparkly.”
“That’s a good word for it. Sparkly hands. Like I was moving them over a glass of ginger ale. And warm all over. I’m going to have to take off this jacket.”
“Peaceful. I feel warmth all the way from my hands up to my shoulders.”
“I was thinking about my daughter. She’s away at college right now, but I kept thinking that she would really like this class. She would like being able to do this. My hands feel about the same as they did the last time—warm all over.”
“I don’t know if I feel different than the last time. But I feel really relaxed and good. My hands feel full of energy. Why don’t they teach this in high schools?”
“That felt quieter than the first and second attunements. I do feel a lot more energy in my hands, though.”
As the students realize that their awareness of the flow of Reiki energy through their hands is deepening and their perceptions of subtle sensations are growing keener, they begin listening on multiple levels: they listen very attentively to their hands and, in a more relaxed way, to the Reiki master. This is an appropriate time for the teacher to briefly review human anatomy. Although no one needs to know anatomy to use Reiki, some knowledge of how the body works and what its parts are called can be quite useful. There are three good reasons to gain this basic understanding: to cope with referential pain; to describe your experience clearly to conventional medical practitioners; and to understand the intuitive impressions you may receive about the nature of a client’s medical condition.
Referential pain is pain that occurs at a distance from the site of injury or infection. For instance, many of the more than two hundred varieties of the herpes virus create referential pain. Once contracted, the virus lives dormant in the nerves at the place where the nerves exit the vertebrae of the spine. When a person who has contracted the virus becomes tired or stressed, the virus will move out along the nerve to a remote site and cause lesions, blisters, or redness and rash. Reiki hands can lessen the pain of shingles, which is caused by a herpes virus, by
